Listen to the story
An island off the Dalmatian coast is marked on the map as Insula Tauris, lying between Pharos and Black Corcyra, today's Hvar and Korčula. It is the Croatian island of Šćedro, about six and a half kilometres long and two wide. People lived there in prehistoric times, and it later traded briskly with the Greek colonies on Issa and Pharos. In 47 BC, Caesar's legate Publius Vatinius defeated the Pompeian fleet off Tauris, a battle told in the ancient account of Caesar's Alexandrian War. Many settlements have been found on the island, with coins running from Nero to the late fourth century.
