Island

Insula Sucron

Hyères?

Listen to the story

Insula Sucron is perhaps to be found among the islands off Hyères on the French Riviera, though the identification is only tentative. The map has pushed the nearby Lérins islands far along the coast towards Narbonne, so the two islands drawn beyond them may stand for the Hyères group. The name itself has faded to a few letters, and older copies read it slightly differently. Sucro was also a river on Spain's east coast, missing from the map, and its name may have been mistaken for an island's by some copyist along the way.
