Island

Insula Ursaria

Sv. Ivan

Listen to the story

Insula Ursaria, probably meaning 'bear island', is one of the small islands off the west coast of Istria, though exactly which one is disputed. It is often placed at Sveti Ivan near Rovinj, but the strongest case is for Sveti Juraj off Vrsar near Poreč, an islet with quarries and a fine ancient harbour at the mouth of the Lim channel. The map shows only its name, the first word now barely legible, and sets it below Pola, because the copyist wrote Pola where Parentium, today's Poreč, belonged. Outside the map, the name survives only in a list of places compiled in Ravenna.
