Island

Lesbos

Listen to the story

Lesbos, the large Greek island off the Turkish coast whose chief town is Mytilene, has almost lost its label: only the closing letters, o and s, can still be read, and older copies supply the rest. Which island drawing the name belongs to is disputed. Older copies set it beside a second island named Icaria, but no trace of that name or of an extra island survives, so it probably belongs to the island drawn to its left. That island carries a small dab of red, most likely a careless touch by the copyist.
