Parpaton

Karpathos

Listen to the story

Insula Parpaton is usually identified with Karpathos, the Greek island between Crete and Rhodes. The Roman writer Pliny noted that the island gave its name to the surrounding waters, the Carpathian Sea. On the map it has all but vanished. Its outline can no longer be made out, and the name has faded so badly that only an opening P and the ending seem legible, and even those are uncertain. Older copies read Parpaton, though scholars remain sceptical of that reading. Those copies also showed a row of neighbouring islands with names, none of which can be recovered today.
