Island

Insula Strongile

Stromboli

Listen to the story

Ancient belief placed the home of Aeolus, keeper of the winds, on Insula Strongile, the volcanic island known today as Stromboli, off Sicily. Even in historical times it was known for frequent fiery eruptions. The map gives it just a name, with no picture, and a list of places compiled in Ravenna spells it Stroile. Scholars have noticed something odd nearby: Malta, Gozo and the many small islands south of Sicily are all missing from the map.
