Island
Insula Siranna
Ischia
Listen to the story
Ischia, the volcanic island off the coast of Campania, is where the map sets Insula Siranna. The name has faded badly: on the parchment only the initial S and probably the final a can still be made out, older copies read Siranna, and no ancient source confirms that form. The Romans usually called the island Aenaria, the Greeks Pithekoussai. Settlers from Euboea founded Cumae from here, until eruptions drove them away around 500 BC. Later the island was prized for its warm baths, and Augustus handed it back to Naples in exchange for Capri.
