Island
Insula Ruraria[?
S. Antioco
Listen to the story
Off the coast of Sardinia lies the island of Sant'Antioco, which the Tabula labels Insula Ruraria, although that reading is far from certain. The name has faded badly and is seen best on the photograph of 1888; today only the first letters survive, with two or three lost at the end. The printed edition of 1598 read Ruraia, that of 1753 only a fragment, and some scholars preferred Rurasa. The geographer Ptolemy knew the island as Molibodes, the lead island, which Latin sources render as Plumbea.
