Insula Pullaria

Brijuni

Listen to the story

Insula Pullaria is probably the Brijuni archipelago off Pula, on the west coast of Istria in Croatia. The map names a single island, while the Roman writer Pliny speaks of several. Perhaps the whole group was simply summed up, or the main island was meant, possibly the one an inscription calls the island of Minerva after its sanctuary. The name sits beside the drawing intended for Roman Pola, which a draughtsman's or copyist's slip had pushed one station along the road. The Greek geographer Strabo praised these islets for their good harbours and fertile soil.
