Island

Insula Poraus

Listen to the story

Insula Poraus may well be Procida, the small island in the Bay of Naples that the geographer Ptolemy knew as Prochyte, though its position on the map would also suit the islet of Formica or Giannutri off the Tuscan coast. The map draws a crescent-shaped island, and its label has faded to the merest traces; older copies read it as Poraus. That form turns up in no ancient source, which is why scholars look to the similar-sounding Prochyta.
