Island

Insula Pamodos

Premuda (Miller)

Listen to the story

The map marks an island in the Adriatic here, Insula Pamodos, though its lettering is now barely legible and the final s has faded completely; older copies still read the name clearly. The name itself is probably a copyist's slip. Someone seems to have turned the letters r and i into an a, so the source likely gave something like Primodos, close to the Primodia in a list of places compiled in Ravenna. Older research linked the island with Pag, but Pag is now usually identified with ancient Cissa. The likelier match is Premuda, a small island off the Croatian coast.
