Island
Insula N.N.
Listen to the story
An island with no name at all, known simply as Insula, meaning island, carries a small temple on the map. It is usually identified with Cape Creus, where the Pyrenees run out into the sea at the old border between Spain and Gaul. A temple of Venus, goddess of love, once stood there. The geographer Ptolemy and the Roman writer Pliny speak of a temple of Pyrenean Venus, and the Greek geographer Strabo of a promontory. The map seems to have turned that headland into an island.
