Island
Insula Pauasta
Pianosa
Listen to the story
Insula Pauasta is the island of Pianosa in the Tyrrhenian Sea, known to the Romans as Planasia, a name they gave it because it lies so low and flat. The Roman writer Pliny warned that this made it dangerous for shipping. On the map the island is painted red, and its label has faded to an initial P and a final a. The fuller reading survives only in early modern copies and has no ancient parallel. Augustus's grandson Agrippa Postumus was exiled here, and the emperor visited him shortly before his own death.
