Insula Ostodis

Isola Ustica

Listen to the story

Insula Ostodis is the island known today as Ustica, lying off the coast of Sicily opposite the ancient town of Solus. Time has worn the map here: only the ending of the name is still legible, its first letter lost, but the early printed copies of 1598 and 1753 still read Ostodis. Ancient writers knew it as Osteodes, among them the historian Diodorus, the geographer Ptolemy and the Roman writer Pliny, and a list of places compiled in Ravenna gives Ostodes.
