Island

Insula Paxus

Paxós, Παξός

Listen to the story

Only a faded label marks Insula Paxus on the map, with no drawing of the island at all. Today just its first letters survive, and older copies read the whole name. Scholars once read the third letter as a v, but it is far more likely an x. The island is Paxós in Greece, which the Roman writer Pliny also knew as Paxos.
