Island

Insula Proconessus

Listen to the story

Only faded letters mark Insula Proconessus on the map, and they are best read on the photographs taken in 1888. There, just the fragments 'Proco' and 'ssus' can still be made out, with a few stray strokes between them; if an abbreviation for 'island' once stood in front, every trace of it has vanished. The printed edition of 1598 still gave the full name, while the one of 1753 already showed a gap in the middle. The island is Marmara Island in Turkey, whose celebrated marble quarries gave the Sea of Marmara its name.
