Island
Insula Sepomaia
? Po delta (Barrington) · Lido (Miller)
Listen to the story
Insula Sepomaia belongs somewhere on the upper Adriatic coast, but no one can say for certain where. Up to three letters of the name have faded, and older copies read it as Sepomaia, a form found nowhere else. One reading sees behind it Septem Maria, the 'seven seas' of the lagoons around the Venetian Lido or the Po delta. Later research looked to Istria instead, to the islet of Pličina Šipar off Umag in Croatia, where a Roman harbour and a Byzantine fort have been found, perhaps the Siparis of a list of places compiled in Ravenna.
