Island
Insula Solar
Listen to the story
Among the islands the Tabula draws off India lies Insula Solar, with no modern identification. Its label has almost vanished: only the first letters for 'island' can still be made out, and scholars are unsure whether it was ever named at all, though older copies read 'Ins Solar'. The name echoes the Island of the Sun known to the Roman writer Pliny and the geographer Pomponius Mela, and a list of places compiled in Ravenna has a similar 'Politra Solis'.
