Portus Salonitanus

Canale Castelli (Miller) · Kaštelanski zaljev

Listen to the story

Two very different harbours hide in the faint letters of Portus Calonitanus. Read one way, the name is found nowhere else and sounds Illyrian, perhaps echoing a local tribe, the Caloecini. Yet the first letter can just as well be a small s and the smudged u an n, which gives the harbour of Salona, the reading older copies already preferred. That fits well: the site is Kaštela Bay in Croatia, the naturally sheltered harbour of Salona, among the most important on the Illyrian coast, and a port of that standing would deserve a place on the map.
