Portus longus in Naxo insula

Porto Azzurro (TIR)

Listen to the story

A riddle hides in the caption Portus longus in Naxo insula, which places a harbour on an island called Naxus, a name no other source gives to Elba. The harbour is Porto Azzurro on Elba, which kept the old name as Porto Longone until 1947. The map draws no picture here, only words, and the last one runs into the shoreline of the oddly shaped island. The letters are uncertain: in may be the figure three instead, and long has even been suspected to be crescent-shaped, describing the island. Nearby lies a Roman cargo ship that sank in the third century with more than two thousand amphorae.
