Port

Portus Epe[/i]tius

bei Stobreč

Listen to the story

Portus Epetius was the harbour of Epetium, a town founded by Greek settlers from the island of Issa on a peninsula near Stobreč, close to Split in Croatia. Its well-sheltered anchorage was already in use in the fourth century BC; today the sediments of the little Žrnovnica stream are slowly filling it in. Just beneath the word for port, a small patch on the parchment looks like an island, but it is only a hole. Even the town's name wavers: the geographer Ptolemy knew it with both an e and an i, and the letter on the map is beyond recovery.
