Port

Portus Epilicus

vllt. Carlopago (Miller)

Listen to the story

Only two faint letters, a p and a v, survive on the painted sea where the map once named Portus Epilicus, and the rest of the name has vanished. The reading comes from the printed editions of 1598 and 1753, which give an abbreviated Por. Epilicus. If they are right, the copyist probably dropped a letter, since harbours on the map are usually shortened to Port. The site lay near Zadar in Dalmatia, perhaps at Karlobag on the Croatian coast, though it has also been placed in the sheltered Novigrad Sea, where the navigable Zrmanja river flows in.
