Port
Portu Namnetu
Nantes
Listen to the story
Portus Namnetum was the harbour of the Namnetes, a Celtic people on the lower Loire, and lies beneath the city of Nantes in France. The map gives it only a name, with no picture. Inscriptions found in Nantes show the harbour villagers and the Loire boatmen honouring the god Vulcan. The geographer Ptolemy calls the chief town of the Namnetes Condevincum, and scholars disagree whether port and capital were one settlement or two. Here the road forks towards Angers, and a figure of eighteen Roman miles could belong to either branch; a station may even be missing.
