Listen to the story
Ango Portus is almost certainly a copyist's slip for Argous Portus, the harbour of the Argo, now Portoferraio on the island of Elba. The Greek geographer Strabo tells how Jason sailed in here while searching for the home of Circe, because Medea wished to visit her aunt, and how the scrapings left by the Argonauts hardened into the many-coloured pebbles on the shore. The map gives only the name, without a picture. Scholars disagree whether the word for island written after it belongs to this harbour, though a stop after 'portus' suggests the name ends there.
