Crocira Portus

Kerkyra · Corfu

Listen to the story

Crocira Portus, the harbour of Corcyra, is Corfu in Greece, the island Homer called Scheria, home of the Phaeacians. An ancient Greek sailing guide credits the island with three harbours, the finest beside the town of the same name, in the bay facing the mainland. The map's lettering puzzles scholars. The island's name is not written horizontally, which is unusual, and on the map a harbour is normally named with the word for port placed first. Perhaps one name was meant for both island and harbour, or a second name vanished during copying, since faint traces of letters still survive in the sea.
