Listen to the story
Portipa stands as a bare name without any drawing on the road to Persepolis, and it is usually identified with Pasargadae in Iran, the oldest residence of the Persian kings. Cyrus the Great founded it on the spot where he had won his decisive victory over the Medes, and his tomb nearby was visited twice by Alexander. The strange name is no copyist's invention, since the geographer Ptolemy knew the place as Portospana. The map's figure of twelve to Persepolis fits the real road if it is counted in parasangs, the old Persian measure of distance.
