Insula Bertula

Maddalena (Miller) · Isola Tavolara (Felice)

Listen to the story

Insula Bertula, simply 'the island of Bertula', is a small island off Sardinia, and scholars disagree about which one it was. The favourite candidates are Maddalena, off the north-eastern tip of Sardinia, and Tavolara. An older proposal looked instead to the islet of Mal di Ventre, facing Capo Mannu. A list of places compiled in Ravenna calls it Pertum, and it is often matched with Berelis, a small island near Sardinia named by the Roman writer Pliny, and with the island of Hermes described by the geographer Ptolemy.
