Island
Insula Arva
Rab
Listen to the story
A faint, barely legible name among the Adriatic islands marks Insula Arva, the Croatian island of Rab. In Roman times it belonged to Liburnia and had a town of the same name, which Augustus fortified anew, and whose inscriptions show a busy civic life of magistrates and local notables. A late Roman church survives at Banjol, and by 533 the town had its own bishop. The map sets the island on the wrong side of its neighbour Pag, but the confusion is old: the geographer Ptolemy placed the town on an island that never existed.
