Island

Insula Acritas

Listen to the story

Somewhere among the Mediterranean islands of the map sits Insula Acritas, drawn as a small triangular island. Above it only the faintest traces of lettering survive, too faded to read, but older copies give the name. No island of that name is known from antiquity. There was, however, a cape called Akritas, listed by the geographer Ptolemy, so the map may well show a headland drawn as an island.
