Island

Dionis

Donousa, Δονούσα

Listen to the story

Dionis is an island that has almost vanished from the map: its outline can no longer be made out, and only faint traces of lettering survive, perhaps a single D. Older copies still read the full name. The place is identified with Donousa, a small Greek island, but the record also links it to the Dionysiades, islands dedicated to the god Dionysus. These were four uninhabited rocks close to the north-eastern tip of Crete, two larger and two smaller, visited only by sponge fishers.
