Island
Delo
Délos, Δήλος
Listen to the story
Delos, the small Greek island in the Cyclades, is among the hardest names on the map to make out. The writing has faded so badly that only an e and an o can still be read, and even those are very uncertain; older copies give the full name. Traces of further letters stand beside it, perhaps part of this name, perhaps another island's. An early reading saw Chios there, yet no drawing of that island survives. The Roman writer Pliny and the geographer Ptolemy both knew Delos.
