Listen to the story
Creticum Pelagus, the Cretan Sea, is the stretch of water north of Crete that Greeks still call the Kritiko Pelagos. The map gives it no picture, only a name set on the water, and the letters have worn so badly that just part of it can still be read. The mapmaker took care to label both this sea and the Libyan Sea immediately below it. The Greek historian Thucydides already knew it by this name, and the Roman writer Pliny called it the Cretan mare. Its southern edge was Crete's own coast, while its northern limit seems to have been vague.
