Island

Dionisa

Unknown island; variants Dionysa, Dionissa (Mediterranean)

Listen to the story

Dionisa is a small island drawn in the Mediterranean on the Tabula, and it has never been matched with a real island. Its outline and name have both faded badly: only the closing letters, sa, can still be read with confidence. Older copies give the full name, but later research read it as Penasa, a name found in no other source. The older reading has support, since a Roman register of sea routes lists an island Dionysa, and a list of places compiled in Ravenna has Dionissa.
