Island
Icaria
Listen to the story
Icaria is an island in the Aegean, today's Ikaria in Greece, linked in Greek legend with Icarus, who fell into the sea nearby. On the map it has suffered badly: only the island's outline, a patch of red colouring and the last traces of lettering survive. The name has faded; older copies read it as the island of Icaria. The Roman geographer Pomponius Mela uses the same form of the name.
