Insula Acrocer

Cape of Gjuhezes (Linguetta)

Listen to the story

Insula Acrocer is a mistake twice over: the map turns a long mountainous peninsula into an island and clips its name from Acroceraunia, from the Greek word for thunderbolt, because lightning was said to strike these mountains often. The peninsula runs out to the Cape of Gjuhezes in Albania, about sixteen kilometres long and up to eight hundred metres high, sheltering the Gulf of Vlorë. Its storms made it proverbial, and the Roman poet Horace called its cliffs notorious rocks. The island also sits much too far from its true position, and the same name turns up again elsewhere on the map, garbled differently, as a road station.
