Island

Insula Arcirse

Listen to the story

Insula Arcirse is an island far out in the Indian part of the map, and its name has almost vanished. Only a few specks of ink survive near it, on damaged parchment, so it is hard to be sure the island was ever named at all, though a printed edition of 1598 still gave it. The name is usually linked with Argyre, the silver island that the geographer Ptolemy knew and that Pliny paired with a golden one, both rich in metal. Suggested identifications include Java, or Bangka with its mineral wealth, but none is certain.
