Island
Insula Curica
Krk
Listen to the story
Insula Curica is the Croatian island of Krk, a large island off the Dalmatian coast that held two Roman towns, one near the present town of Krk and one near Omišalj. The island took its name from its people, the Curictae, yet the form Curica occurs nowhere else; the island's name seems to have blended with that of its chief town, Curicum. Troops of Caesar and Pompey fought over it in the civil war, and the emperor Claudius granted its inhabitants the legal status of Italian soil. Notable early Christian buildings and sculpture have been found there.
