Island
Insula Cynura
Kálamos, Κάλαμος
Listen to the story
A small island drawn among the Ionian isles carries, just above it, the last faint traces of a name read as Insula Cynura. The black ink has faded beyond reading, and the name survives through the printed editions of 1598 and 1753, though the later one leaves out the island itself. It is most probably Kálamos in Greece, the ancient Carnos east of Lefkada, yet the Echinades and the islets off the south-western tip of the Peloponnese have also been proposed. The name may even be a doublet of Cyrona, another island on the map.
