Island
Insula Cunicularia
La Maddalena
Listen to the story
The islands of the Maddalena archipelago, in the strait between Sardinia and Corsica, are usually taken to be the Insula Cunicularia of the map, where the name sits beside two small red islands. Today only a few letters survive; the edition of 1598 still read the full name, the one of 1753 just its ending. The Roman writer Pliny places a group called the Cuniculariae in that strait, yet the map sets its islands off quite the wrong end of Sardinia. Perhaps the copyist meant a cape the geographer Ptolemy names instead, and then the position would be right.
