Island
Insula Chios
Listen to the story
The island labelled Insula Chios is identified today as Kos in Greece, lying opposite the Ceramic Gulf, rather than Chios. Only the opening letters of the name survive. Older copies read Chios, while later research restores the ancient form Cous. The Roman writer Pliny gives the island a circumference of a hundred Roman miles, about a hundred and fifty kilometres, and Homer knew it by an earlier name, Meropis. Kos was renowned for its excellent wine, its ointments and pottery, and for silk, woven into the famous Coan garments.
