Island
Insula Cercinna?
Listen to the story
Insula Cercinna is only a proposed label, for the map draws this island with no name at all, set between Surrentum in Italy and Tacape in Africa. It seems to belong to the African coast, and so it has usually been read as Cercina in the Lesser Syrtis, facing a temple of Venus on the map, today the Kerkennah Islands off Tunisia. The geographer Ptolemy lists it, and the Roman writer Pliny gives it twenty-five miles in length and twelve in breadth. It had a good harbour, and Caesar took it.
