Island
Insula Cephalania
Kefalloniá, Κεφαλλονιά
Listen to the story
Insula Cephalania is Kefalonia, the Greek island near the entrance to the Gulf of Corinth, parted from Ithaca by a narrow strait. Homer knew it as Same, and its high Mount Aenus carried a temple of Zeus, king of the gods; the island also had four towns. The map holds a puzzle here: a second, smaller island drawn below it bears exactly the same name. Whether the mapmaker or a later copyist slipped cannot be told, and if it was the copyist, the smaller island's original name is lost for good.
