Insula Casara

Listen to the story

The map sets Insula Casara in the Persian Gulf, an island on the coast where Carmania met Persis. A list of places compiled in Ravenna names it too, between Organa and Cataga. Its exact site is uncertain, but sailing directions for these waters record a long sandy island called Omm el-Qasar, from an Arabic word for a rocky bank, and an Italian traveller once noted an island named Casar in the same area. It is a coast of creeks and mangroves that Alexander's admiral Nearchus described vividly.
