Island

Insula Cephalena

Kefalonia

Listen to the story

Kefalonia, the Greek island in the Ionian Sea, is where Insula Cephalena belongs, although the map already shows another island called Cephalania close by, so this label is probably a duplicate. The parchment is scuffed where one letter should be, and the name has faded; older copies read it in full. One explanation is that the label once marked Pale, the island's ancient town on a hill facing Zakynthos, whose ruins lie near Lixouri. Because the name was written out in the sea, it came to be taken for an island of its own.
