Island
Insula Corcyra
Korčula
Listen to the story
An island off the Dalmatian coast bears the name Insula Corcyra on the Tabula, today Korčula in Croatia. The map gives only the plain name, but Greek and Roman writers called it Black Corcyra, probably because of its dark forests, and to tell it apart from the island of the same name further south. The poet Apollonius of Rhodes has sailors seeing it darkened by woods on every side, and tells how Poseidon carried the nymph Corcyra off there. Settlers from Cnidus founded a colony around 600 BC. Augustus punished the islanders for raiding, yet the island was soon densely settled again, governed from Salona.
