Island

Insula Corsura o. Insula Capreae?

Listen to the story

Insula Capreae or Insula Corsura are the names scholars have proposed for this island, though the Tabula gives it no name at all. It is one of two nameless islands drawn off Oplontis, the villa town near Pompeii. If it is Capreae, it is Capri, which faces the headland of Minerva just three Roman miles away and, according to one tradition, was torn from it by an earthquake. The Roman writers Pliny and Tacitus place it eight miles from Surrentum, modern Sorrento. It measured about forty stadia around and held two small settlements. The other candidate, Corsura, is Pantelleria.
