Island

Insula Corsica

Gorgona o. Capraia?

Listen to the story

A small island facing Pisa carries the label Insula Corsica, yet it cannot be the great island of Corsica, and it is probably Gorgona or Capraia, off the Tuscan coast. The name has faded badly: only the final letter is certain, and the first could as well be a G as a C. Older copies read Corsica, and the third letter does seem to have been an R. The island itself is coloured red, like its neighbour nearby. The geographer Ptolemy lists both Gorgona and Capraia, and a list of places compiled in Ravenna names Gorgona.
