Insula Calliopa

Listen to the story

A tear in the parchment has left little of Insula Calliopa; today only a few letters survive, and the full name comes from the printed editions of 1598 and 1753. Even that is probably a copyist's slip, with a double S turned into a double L, for the place is surely Cassiope, the harbour town and cape at the northern tip of Corfu, now Kassiopi. It was not an island at all, but the promontory described by the geographer Ptolemy. The Roman writer Suetonius recalls that the emperor Nero sang before its temple of Zeus.
