Island

Insula Brattia

Brač

Listen to the story

An island off the Dalmatian coast, close to Roman Salona, carries the name Insula Brattia, and it is Brač in Croatia. This large island depended on Salona, and its wealth was plain: the Roman writer Pliny noted its many goats, altars to Liber, the god of wine, point to vineyards, and its limestone was quarried. The main settlement, judging by its many inscriptions, was Škrip on the north side, with its harbour at Splitska, where Mithras was also worshipped. Greek writers knew the island as Elaphoussa, while its own people called it Brettanis.
