Arypio

Prozor

Listen to the story

Arypio is Arupium, a fortified town of the Iapodes near Otočac in Croatia, on the hills of Prozor and Vital. Its people, the Arupini, were counted among the most warlike of the region, yet in 35 BC Octavian took the town after a short siege. The Roman poet Tibullus already mentions the fields of the Arupini. Altars and rock-cut sanctuaries of Mithras have been found here. From Arupium a Roman register of routes leads by Bibium to Romula; the map's spelling with a y appears nowhere else.
